7 Retro Surf Style Ideas to Create Your Own Surf Shack
Create your own surf style beach shack with these surfing inspirations.
I’ve been a fan of surfing and surf style and culture ever since I was an impressionable kid in the 4th grade who read “Gidget“ (a 1957 book that turned into a series of movies and a TV show that starred Sally Field). I followed that up by seeing “The Endless Summer,” a 1966 documentary about a couple of surfers who roam the world looking for waves. Later, I got into surf music like Dick Dale, The Surfaris and The Chantays.
Even though I have never surfed a single day in my life (not coordinated enough to keep myself from drowning), I have since been obsessed with surf culture. One of these days I will make it to Hawaii to watch big wave surfing and live the dream. In the meantime, I must be content with watching surf documentaries, reading The Surfers Journal and watching surfing videos on ESPN.
That love of surfing and its retro surf style and culture has really stuck with me. There’s something really meaningful that I picked up paying attention to all that surfing culture as a kid and that’s an understanding that the responsibility for caring for the environment lies with us, and that nature should be honored, valued and respected.
With summertime almost here, it seemed appropriate to share a roundup of retro surf style for those of you who may be into surfer culture as well. Whether adding some surf-inspired touches to your home or decorating your beach cottage, enjoy these surf style decor ideas, and catch some great waves!

7 statement style ideas for your dining area
Curtains in Yoki 120310, £31 a metre, Scion
Create a standout scheme for your dining room or kitchen/dining area with these eye-catching style ideas.
HINTS OF SPICE
A long refectory table with benches forms the focal point of this relaxed dining area (above). Team with boldly patterned floor-length curtains in shades of cinnamon and paprika to add warmth and add brass ceiling lamps for extra drama. This look is ideal for a long, narrow space.
CRYSTAL AND GLASS
Emilia Jazzy bar ceiling light, £420; Frost table, from £399; Moritz dining chairs, £299 each; all John Lewis
Add glamour with a stunning ceiling pendant designed to light the dining table. Then, use mirror tiles with an antiqued finish to create a feature wall with wow factor, try Looking Glass of Bath. This is a great look for a smaller dining area.
VINTAGE FLORAL
Marianne 401-41 wallpaper, £89 a roll, Sandberg
You can be bold when decorating a separate dining room, so go for a richly patterned floral wallpaper. Paint the woodwork in a complementary Swedish blue shade. And look out for heavyweight linen to use as a luxurious tablecloth.
ROUGH LUXE
Buckland bench, from £1,265; Harrogate rectangular table in Fog, from £810; all Neptune
An exposed brick wall is perfect for an on-trend industrial-chic look. Get a similar effect with the Bricks wallpaper, from Next, £15 a roll. Hang a row of framed black and white photos to contrast with the textured surface.
COUNTRY HOME
Dorset table, £1,000 each; Dorset chairs, £475 for two; Ockley glass ceiling pendants, £80 each; all Laura Ashley
Choose pale painted, chunky wood furniture to create the look of a country kitchen. Stone floor tiles and a set of glass pendant lights will add a sense of grandeur to the scheme. Finish the look with mini olive trees used as eye-catching table decorations.
WHITE ON WHITE
Calypso kitchen, from £10,000, Crown Imperial
An extended composite work surface makes a seamless and roomy breakfast bar. The all-white scheme enhances the sense of space in a kitchen/diner and creates a sleek, contemporary look. Bar stools with a backrest are more comfortable for leisurely meals.
PATTERN PLAY
Javier extending table and four Pop chairs, £1,605, Barker and Stonehouse
In smaller spaces, a round table and curved-back chairs will take up less room. Paper just one wall behind the table with a distinctive pattern to define an eating area. For similar wallpaper try Pierson Grey by Thibaut, from Wallpaper Direct, £68 a roll. Add a textured rug to a polished wood floor for comfort and contrast underfoot.
7 Street Style Trendsetters To Watch In 2020 For Fresh Outfit Inspo
Street style as you know and consume it today hasn't actually been around that long. The Sartorialist's Scott Schuman began shooting street style back in 2006, and Bill Cunningham started shooting outside the shows — and outside of Fashion Week altogether — decades ago, ushering in the modern era of outfit inspo. And while sites like Style.com were posting images of show-goers and off-duty models, it wasn't until Instagram's launch in 2010 that things really began to take off. Now, it's fair to argue that what's going on outside of the shows is covered just as much as what's going on inside. In 2020, street style's must-follow trendsetters are those who showcase unique fashion sensibilities, but also understand and utilize social media to offer an enviable-yet-relatable look into their worlds.
With another season of major fashion weeks approaching, it's a good time to break down a few of the newer key players you'll see in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, offering both interesting outfit ideas and insight into the next big cult fashion brands. Obviously, there are the seasoned attendees who are always reliable for a strong look — think Emmanuelle Alt, Tamu McPherson, Caroline Issa, and Sarah Harris. But, if you're on the hunt for a few fresh names to add to your must-follow list, consider the impressive roster of women below.

She has fun with fashion, while remaining ever polished and professional, an impressive feat to replicate for your own wardrobe.
