Upholstery Fabrics Retail

Stationary category highlights easy living

Diamond Sofa’s large-scale Arcadia, loose down-filled double cushioned design, is an example of many new sectionals this week.
LAS VEGAS — Buyers at Las Vegas Market will see an emphasis on sectionals in many showrooms this week, as well as a focus on ottomans, many of which include storage.
Sectional configurations offer a lot of flexibility, both on retail floors and in the home, and have big appeal especially in casual family rooms geared to relaxation. Ottomans go particularly well with those sorts of combinations, whether as alternative seating while entertaining guests or as a place to kick back.
In terms of fabric, velvet again will be found in abundance, and several vendors are offering linens and linen blends that go well with casual, relaxed upholstery.
Modular movement
Big, hefty sectionals that make a statement while keeping things casual were prevalent at October High Point Market, and that continues in Las Vegas.
Stanton’s 376 three-piece sectional, for example, is a hefty 107-inches deep and 163-inches across, complemented by a 50-by-50-inch oversized ottoman. At market, it’s shown in “Lux,” a plush heavyweight padded chenille available in six colors that adds textural heft to the sectional’s scale.
Norwalk continues to make waves with the modern bohemian vibe of its collaboration with designer Kim Salmela. This week’s introductions for the collection include the Saxton sectional. Over-stuffed arms, deep seating and extra-stuffed seat cushions add visual and comfort impact. The configuration can be extended with an armless chair between sections.
The generously scaled Warner from Palliser has high-density, high-resilience foam in the seat and a foam-wrapped arm detail. Available in a variety of sectional configurations, an oversize chaise also is available.
Stylus’ Chessa sectional, which features a stain barrier and storage ottoman, is part of an in-stock program for quick delivery, while the transitional Ewing, has Feathersoft-plus seat cushion and feather backs and toss pillows. The mid-century inspired Olena and contemporary Tatum with flange welted arms also have sectional options.
Ottoman empire
As seen from several examples above, ottomans go well with sectionals, but the piece is getting attention in its own right in a number of showrooms.
Norwalk, for instance, is expanding its Leo Variations ottoman program with new additions at market. The collection has more than 2,000 options, which include a selection of shape, size, upholstery treatments and legs, as well as a choice of more than 800 fabrics, 150 leathers and a dozen nailhead options.
Round, oval, square and rectangular ottomans are available four sizes ranging from 36- to 48-inches, and tops can be tailored with four different upholstery treatments: plain, mitered with a button, square buttonless tufted and a traditional diamond button-tufted version.
Other options are a choice of border trims that include single welt, single welt with small nail head trim at the bottom, two rows of nail head trim and a welt less version that centers large nail heads between the welt line and the bottom of the piece; and eight different leg options ranging from cabriole to tapered to a traditional carved style with casters.
Norwalk also in the showroom has a point of sale fixture designed to merchandise product options in a 32-square-foot retail footprint.
Modway offers Anthem, a large square ottoman with button tufting and performance velvet fabric. With dense foam padding for extra seating comfort, it’s available in five colors and six shapes and sizes.
New Pacific Direct is highlighting ottomans as well as upholstered storage benches. For example, the Essen round ottoman has a walnut-finish wood top and quilted blush-pink velvet upholstered base with ample storage space inside, while the contemporary Lorient ottoman has plush dark gray velvet button tufting upholstery and gold-painted steel legs. Storage benches include the contemporary La Jolla square bench with plush button-tufting upholstery; and the Ruby fabric bench with a chic, capsule shape and crosshatch flat-weave fabric on a plush cushion contrasting with gold-painted steel legs.
Zuo always has a round of new ottomans, and this week’s introductions include the Colmar with an elaborate fringe around the base for a Western, boho chic look, while the Constellation ottoman in silver and black or gold and black has studs inspired by the stars in the night sky.
Looks in linen
Linen is a good fit for clean-lined casual upholstery, and it naturally blends with the popularity of neutral tones in fabric upholstery.
Four Hands had success in October with linen sofas and sectionals, and is following up on that at Las Vegas Market. Examples in the showroom include the June chair. Inspired by Japanese tatamis, it has an outer frame of natural cane and paneling, contrasted with an exclusive cream linen-blend performance fabric on the seating.
Other examples include Classic Home’s clean-lined Cassidy accent chair, which features pinstripe linen-blend upholstery atop flared legs; and the bold Miller accent lounge chair from Diamond Sofa, whose fabric choices include gray and white linen fabrics.
Honest Sleep’s Natural & Organic collection of sofas and sectionals comes in an organic cotton vanilla fabric, but is upgradable to 100% linen.
Velvet is all over the place again, and buyers will find seating and ottomans in an abundance of showrooms including Diamond Sofa, Furniture of America, Modway, New Pacific Direct and Zuo.

Football fever: Continental ensures seating comfort at major sporting events in the United States

AUBURN HILLS, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan 16, 2020--
The technology company Continental equips some of the largest and most important stadiums in the world with its upholstery materials, including the Hard Rock Stadium in North Miami, home of the Miami football team. In early February this stadium will host one of the largest sporting events in the country. There will hardly be any empty seats in the 65,326-seat stadium. With a game duration of three to four hours, plus a halftime show, football fans will spend almost a whole day there. To fully enjoy the game, comfortable seats are a must. In the sunny state of Florida, comfort doesn't just mean a well-padded seat. On about 230 days per year, the sun shines mercilessly at the stadium for hours on end. Continental has developed a solution to ensure that the seats are kept at a comfortable temperature.

"We ensure comfortable seating for football fans while using a special 'cool colors' technology,” said Jim Hill, who is a passionate football fan and within Continental heading the North American region for its business area ContiTech. “In addition to nanocoating, we use special color pigments that reflect up to 80 percent of UV radiation in the near infrared range. The result: the heating of the upholstery, made in our Winchester, Virginia, plant, is reduced by about 20 percent and the material remains cooler than other textiles by up to 15 degrees Celsius."
However, stadium operators are faced with completely different challenges. In Miami, not only are the temperatures high, but the humidity is too. This challenges the seating material quite a bit - not to mention the regular wear and tear at the events. A surface material must withstand this so that the stadium still looks its best years later. For the comprehensive renovation of the arena in 2015, the operators opted for Continental's skai cool colors Venezia material and incorporated it into more than 7,000 seats.
Impressive design, feel and choice of colors
About 85 percent of the material consists of a PVC composite, about 13 percent is made of PES knitted fabrics and vinyl. The nanocoating makes the upholstery material not only extremely UV-resistant, but also weather- and stain-resistant. This also makes it very easy to clean. Even drinks, food scraps or shoe marks hardly leave any visible traces on the seats.
Visually, the operators like the material's fine textile look, which makes it appear elegantly sporty. The woven structure also provides a pleasant feel. Another important factor is the color. The option "iceblue" perfectly matches the colors of the Miami football team.
"Thanks to the range of 12 colors, we can supply tailor-made solutions for our customers," Hill explained.
At Home in the Soccer World
Many soccer clubs in Germany are also taking advantage of this benefit and have equipped their stadiums with seat cushions in club colors. Thanks to the skai surface material, fans – whether in Munich, Wolfsburg or Mönchengladbach – are assured of a comfortable seat at every game throughout the season. The same applies to ice hockey games and track-and-field meets. In total, seat covers from Continental are used at more than 50 sports arenas worldwide and are a regular fixture at the most important sports events – particularly in Europe.
The material was so well received in the U.S. that it was given an award by the North American Seating Company. The use of the material is not limited to stadiums only. It is also used in restaurants, public places, residential areas, healthcare, retail and other outdoor applications. Soon the material will appear on screen in front of millions and millions of people – even if the 7,000 seats at the world's largest football event are guaranteed to be occupied by people in the audience.
Continental develops pioneering technologies and services for the sustainable and connected mobility of people and their goods. Founded in 1871, the technology company offers safe, efficient, intelligent and affordable solutions for vehicles, machines, traffic and transportation. Continental generated sales of €44.4 billion in 2018 and currently employs more than 240,000 people in 60 countries and markets.

New York interior design firm opens showroom in Naples

New York interior design firm Style & Décor has opened a new showroom at 400 Fifth Avenue South, Suite 100. © Submitted New York interior design firm Style & Décor has opened a new showroom at 400 Fifth Avenue South, Suite 100.
New York interior design firm Style & Décor has opened a new showroom at 400 Fifth Avenue South, Suite 100 (former space of Joseph Wendt Custom Clothiers) filled with fabrics, finishes and custom furniture.
“Style & Décor is a boutique fabrication studio specializing in re-upholstery and custom furniture design,” says founder and interior designer Joanna Wlodarczyk. The firm joins its sister business, J Art Deco, founded by Jarek Gawkowski in Brooklyn, New York in 2002, to bring product designs to life.
The husband-and-wife team bring more than 30 years of industry experience to Naples ranging from bespoke home furnishings, textile production for private homes to storage and display solutions for commercial interiors to boat interior design. The Style & Décor team also creates custom furniture pieces for retail stores and other product displays lined with leather and fabric. The firm contracts with hotels to design and manufacture outstanding bedding and window treatments.
“Custom upholstery requires skilled labor and isn’t well-suited for long production runs of the same items common in overseas factories,” explains Wlodarczyk. “We are custom upholstery and furniture masters who create unique furniture pieces. We do not have standard dimensions, styles or sizes. We take your idea, sketch, rendering or picture and work with you to develop it into an actual piece you,” she promises.
Linking with a highly curated global network of skilled woodworkers, metal fabricators, seamstresses and upholsterers, Style & Decor takes pride in delivering quality pieces with exquisite detailing, heritage craftsmanship and an entirely unique point of view, says Gawkowski.
“We believe our dedication to our craft, combined with old-word European sensitivities and a commitment to maintaining the highest product quality standards sets Style & Decor apart as a furniture industry leader in producing quality home furnishings,” he adds.
A graduate of the University of Warsaw in Poland, Wlodarczyk began her interior design career in a workroom. She met her husband in New York three months after arriving from Poland. He was an upholsterer and knew how to build and design furniture. “He knew what was inside,” says Wlodarczyk. “My husband is an artist at creating upholstered couches, armchairs and beds that help you relax at home after a long day at work.”’
Together the Gawkowskis grew their business quickly and developed a reputation for handing difficult jobs. In 2009, the couple visited Naples and fell in love with area while staying at Waldorf Astoria on vacation. The Clam Pass tram was a favorite of our children Oliver and Luca (ages 10 and 3). After several visits, the family decided to relocate to Naples and selected 5th Avenue South to locate their studio.
“We never looked at any other space,” says Gawkowski. “There is a unique happiness to 5th Avenue South that is contagious and the nearby beach was simply too good to pass up,” he adds.
Style & Décor offers custom upholstery, furniture, lighting accessories as well as antiques and custom pieces from artisans. The company also designs wall coverings and window treatments. Hand made furniture includes resin and wood tabletops with gold lead edges from Poland, handmade metals bases by a New York artist available in gold and bronze, along with a limited collection of cocktail tables, and smart house draperies using a remote to adjust and customize Roman shades.  The showroom includes a variety of vases, accessories, candles, pillows, trays, fabrics, wallpapers, and trimmings for indoors and outdoors.
Style & Décor is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am until 8 pm and closed Sundays. For more information or a free estimate on your next design or upholstery project, call (239) 919-8421 or visit www.styleanddecornaples.com or follow on IG @styleanddecornaples.
